Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, both lawyers. When she was just five when she left for Oxfordshire and attended her first Dragon School. Emma was only six when she made the decision to make it as an actress. The actress trained for several years at Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a full-time school of theatre in Oxford in which she learned acting and singing. She had already performed in numerous Stagecoach or school shows when she reached the age of ten. When 1999 began, casting was announced for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the film adaptation of British writer J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was discovered by agents via an Oxford teacher. After the eight auditions, producer David Heyman told Emma and fellow applicants Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint that they had been selected for the role of the three lead characters Hermione Granger Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. The movie's release Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) was Emma's first cinematic screen appearance. The film broke records for the opening day sales as well as opening week-end take-offs as well as being the most-grossing feature in 2001. The film received praise from experts, as was the performances of its three stars. The well-known British publication The Daily Telegraph called her performance "awesome.
